The Assessor's Office is, by state law, charged with the discovery, listing, and valuing all taxable property within the town limits of Southington.

The Assessor's Office prices motor vehicles using the NADA price guides and others. All motor vehicles are taxable including unregistered cars, trucks, trailers, motorcycles, ATV's, snowmobiles. Vehicles with out-of-state registrations are also taxable if the owner is a resident of Southington. Vehicles which are sold, stolen and not recovered, totaled, or registered in the state of new residence may have the tax obligation adjusted after submission of proofs of the disposition of the vehicle - (link to, "Standard Form of Proof").

Real Esate

Land and residential, commercial or industrial improvement are valued as of the last jurisdiction wide revaluation.

Revaluation

Occurs every four years, the most recent effective was for the October 1, 2001 assessment.

Personal Property

Must be annually declared to the Assessor on or before November 1st of each year. The declaration form can be downloaded from this web site. (link to "Declaration Personal Property").

Personal Property is defined as: unregistered motor vehicle, horse & ponies, commercial fishing apparatus, farm machinery, farm tools, mechanics tools, commercial furniture fixtures and equipment, electronic data processing equipment, telecommunications equipment, cables, conduits, pipes, poles, towers, underground mains, wires, turbines, etc., and all other taxable goods not mentioned above.

Failure to file in a timely manner will result in an assessment made by the Assessor from the best information available and a 25% assessment penalty will be added. Extensions of the filing date may be granted for good cause. An extension request must be submitted in writing preferably (10) ten days prior to the November 1st deadline.
